Cheapest petrol and diesel all year

Cheapest petrol and diesel all year

With the weather warming up, it's the perfect time to hit the road and soak up some sunshine. The good news is that rising fuel prices are no longer a concern, as petrol and diesel are currently at their lowest prices of the year.

As of the week beginning March 24, the average price of a litre of diesel has dropped to €1.440, which is 0.7% less than last week. It's the cheapest diesel has been since mid-December 2024.

Similarly, the average price of a litre of petrol has fallen by 0.6% compared to last week, now standing at €1.508. This is the lowest petrol price since mid-November 2024.

Fuel prices have been steadily decreasing since mid-July 2024, marking an unusual trend during the peak summer holiday season—a time when road trips are most common. Between July and October, petrol prices fell by 8.9%, and diesel prices dropped by 9.2%.

However, prices spiked just before Christmas and continued rising into the new year. Thankfully, the trend seems to be reversing now.

At current prices, filling up a 55-litre tank of diesel costs around €79.20—about €5 less than at the same time last year, when the cost was €84.26. For petrol drivers, a full tank will set you back approximately €82.94—roughly €6 less than in the same week in 2024, when it was €88.93.

These current prices are also significantly lower than before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, when the price of diesel was €1.479 per litre and petrol stood at €1.591 per litre.

Both fuels remain far below their peaks from the summer of 2022, when petrol hit €2.141 and diesel reached €2.10.

As of today, the price of 95 unleaded petrol in Spain is well below the European Union average of €1.646 per litre, and the eurozone average of €1.692. Diesel is similarly cheaper in Spain, priced at €1.440 per litre, compared to the EU average of €1.564 and the eurozone average of €1.586.
